Varunika Gupta

Drawing Bengaluru, Blr Hubba 2026

About the Artist

Varunika views architecture as a muse, creating “portraits” of buildings that feel alive. Through ink, watercolor, and 2D animation, she explores the intersection of commerce and culture. Her work often serves as an archive, capturing the facades of places that no longer exist. From local streets to international tables, she has illustrated for iconic restaurants like Bungalow in New York City and Jhol in Kuala Lumpur.

Indian shopfronts are a visual treat. Rather than just being a place to buy things, the entire facade acts like a giant invitation, welcoming people in with bold colors and hand-painted signs. There is a world of detail to get lost in—the way wares are perfectly stacked, the charm of hand-lettered boards, and the nimbu-mirchi ornaments hung for good luck.

Captured here is a Nandhini Milk Parlour, a staple in almost every Indian neighborhood. It represents a shared daily rhythm: the heart of the morning routine for anyone who forgot to put their milk coupons out the night before and had to make that familiar early-morning dash to the store.
